Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.

Notice the first reason people reject the gospel is that "the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts" (v. 12). That's deception—the deceiving spirits and demons I mentioned earlier. The second reason is more complicated. Jesus described those who hear the good news and "receive the word with joy" (v. 13). These people are genuinely excited about Christianity.

Be especially true as we draw closer to the period known as the tribulation. An increasing number of cultural Christians with little or no roots in the gospel will decide the cost is too great, and they will turn their backs on Christ.

Set your mind fully on the hope you have in Christ, and be ready to pay any price, challenge any foe, and confront any lie for the sake of the gospel.

It's all right to talk to God about your problems. But sometimes you need to talk to your problems about God. Preach the goodness of God to them. Prophesy the promises of God to them. Proclaim the victory of the cross to them.

In Scripture we see example after example of God coming alongside people who felt weak and inadequate—who felt the absence of the strength needed for the assignment they'd been given—and calling them to be strong. In fact, there are more than thirty occasions in the Bible where God commands someone to be strong.
